Two Stereo Microphones

A single high-quality stereo microphone can already capture a room with remarkable coherence. Adding a second does not simply create more signal—it opens a much broader creative field.

Different perspectives can suddenly be combined: intimacy and distance, direct sound and room, classic stereophony and immersive playback. An ensemble can be perceived not only with precise localisation, but as a spatial whole.

01 / The pair

Four capsules, many perspectives

The two microphones can be used as a shared system or independently. This allows different stereo arrangements to be combined—for a precise centre, a wider representation of the room or an additional rear perspective.

With larger ensembles, choirs or acoustically interesting spaces, this creates recordings that can be shaped much more freely later. Four carefully matched signals are also a valuable foundation for surround, Dolby Atmos and other immersive productions.

Because both microphones were built by hand, they share not only the same technical idea, but also a visible and sonic signature.

Bodies, capsules and tuning were chosen deliberately. The result is not a neutral construction kit, but a pair with its own identity and reliable coherence.

02 / The capsule

Flat K47: clarity without harshness

At the heart of both microphones is an Arienne Audio “Flat K47”. Its construction draws on the familiar K47 family, while avoiding the characteristic stronger presence in the upper midrange.

It was initially made in small quantities in Michigan and later entered regular production due to demand. For my stereo pair, the remarkably consistent tuning was decisive: front and rear are closely matched in sound, making variable polar patterns and spatial techniques more dependable.

The capsule provides a calm, detailed foundation. Vocals, speech, acoustic instruments and amplifiers can be captured precisely without an obvious treble emphasis pushing itself forward.

The frequency response remains balanced. The signal therefore feels clear and open without imposing a pronounced presence boost on voices or instruments.

The capsules suit both individual sources and complex rooms. Their restraint leaves room for positioning, mixing and later sound shaping.

03 / Matching

Coherence from four signals

The more similarly the capsules respond, the more stable the spatial image remains. In stereo and multichannel recording, this consistency matters more than spectacular individual traits.

Two identical capsules are only the beginning. What matters is how coherently the pair responds as a spatial tool.

03 / The sonic universe

One microphone, many possible voices

I do not use the two microphones only as a stereo system. Individually, they also work for vocals, speech, acoustic instruments and guitar amplifiers.

The linear character of the Flat K47 capsules provides a strong starting point. In post-production, modelling tools can guide the signal in different sonic directions—from restrained and modern to more strongly coloured vintage characters.

Polar pattern, proximity effect and off-axis behaviour can also be varied later in the appropriate workflow. This does not replace careful microphone placement, but expands the options when an arrangement needs a different perspective in the mix.

04 / Ambisonics

From a stereo pair into three-dimensional space

Ambisonics describes space not only as left and right, but through directional components that can later be decoded for different loudspeaker layouts or binaural playback.

In my setup, the two stereo microphones are placed as close together and as symmetrically as possible. The four signals are then transferred into an Ambisonics workflow. The neutral recording becomes a format that can be delivered as stereo, surround, 360° audio or a headphone mix, depending on the destination.

The linear tuning of the capsules is helpful here: the less intrinsic coloration arises between channels, the more cleanly direction and space can be shaped in further processing.

The microphones are positioned so that their four capsules capture a spatial field as coherently as possible.

Four channels become spatial information

The individual tracks are combined and monitored as an Ambisonics signal through a suitable encoder and decoder chain.

One source, several playback formats

The same recording can produce classic stereo versions, binaural headphone versions or immersive loudspeaker mixes.

Limitations

Spatiality requires control

  • Encoders, decoders and signal paths must match the chosen geometry
  • Microphone position, room acoustics and playback system strongly shape the result
  • A four-channel setup offers considerable freedom, but does not reach the directional resolution of higher-order Ambisonics
